Scat - Week of 02.03.14

Pages Read: 0-32
Prompt: Summarize what you have just read

Scat starts off in Mrs.Starch's biology class, Mrs. Truman is the most feared teacher at Truman High School. Just to explain how mean she really is, one of the students in her class named Marta threw up under the pressure of Mrs. Starch's question. When this happened, Mrs. Starch did not let Marta go to the nurse until she answered the question! I personally would hate having a teacher like that, I feel like many of the kids at Heritage would talk back to Mrs. Starch. Well, in the first chapter, I was introduced to the main character named Nick, who is in Mrs. Starch's class. Mrs. Starch was looking for another "victim" to put under the pressure. She walked over to Marta, and Nick couldn't help but feel like he needed to help her, so he raised his hand. He looked down waiting for the shark to eat her fish, but instead she called out a different name, "Duane". People called Duane; Smoke since when he was in elementary school he was very short and skinny, but when he went to middle school, he grew a foot and gained thirty pounds. He has a very bad record of getting into trouble, so once Mrs. Starch asks him a question about a homework assignment they had, everyone in the class leans in their chairs to see what kind of response he will have.

In chapter two, when Smoke gives attitude to Mrs. Starch by telling her that she leaves too much homework that he doesn't know what he has read. Mrs.Starch starts giving a lecture, pointing her pencil at Smoke, and Smoke bites the eraser part and eats it! Mrs. Starch loses it, she gets so angry that she makes Smoke write a 500 word essay. It was no surprise when Smoke stands up from his desk and threatened Mrs. Starch, and then he stormed out of the room. With that, Smoke had to talk with the headmaster, which as you can guess, didn't go so well. After that talk, Smoke didn't come back to school which worried everyone really. Since Smoke had a history of getting suspended, and getting expelled from several schools and then starting random fires to release his anger.

After the whole incident with Smoke, the biology class goes on a field trip to Black Vine Swamp. While the class was there, a small wildfire starts far from where they were, and I think that we all know who might have been involved with that. So far Scat has been a very interesting book, that seems to have a lot of attention grabbers!

  1. This looks like a really good book, I might read it soon! Mrs. Startch seems really scary and I would agree that the students here would talk back to that kind of teacher! Smoke and Mrs. Startch's attitudes are a bit ridiculous, in my opinion. "Scat" still seems like an interesting book. Lovely blog post.

  2. Is this book part of Battle of the Books? I just started reading my second book too but this book seems more interesting. I think you did a great job describing every detail about the beginning of this book. Is the book called Scat because of Mrs. Starch? You did a great description of the setting which made make good picture in my head. Thanks for the Recommendation

    1. Yes, this is also my second book, that is part of Battle of the Books. I'm still not sure, but that seems like a good prediction.

  5. Do you have any idea of who 'Scat' is? My guess would be that it's a cat since the cover of the book has a cat on it. Mrs.Starch sounds like a very cold-hearted teacher. I have no idea why she isn't fired yet. Smoke has some guts to talk back to Mrs. Starch, especially having the thought of how she may react to it. Who is Nick in the book? Amazing blog this week!
