Drawing From Memory

Pages read: 0 - 39
Prompt: After reading I wonder . . .

After reading this book, I actually have a lot of questions in my mind. The book is about the
author telling his story of how he grew up in China, and artists there were seen as people who you couldn't respect, but the thing was; the author wanted to be an artist. He told his story of how his father didn't agree with it and how he had to hide all of his drawings. I had one question about this, did all of China see artists as people who really don't have a proper job? I was kind of confused because later in the book, he meets one of his idols who is a very well-known cartoonist that was actually born and raised in China.

A second question which I have after what I read is how did he find the hope to actually continue working on something that he knew a lot of people including his own family wouldn't be proud of. I think that personally if my mother or father told me that what I wanted to be and what I was passionate about wasn't a career and wasn't something that they would be proud of, I think that I would have stopped pursuing it. I think that whatever I do, my mom will be the person to tell me the truth and not put her feelings into it, so if she thought that what I wanted to be wasn't worth it, I would have stopped. That is why i am so curious to see how Allen Say, kept on going and kind of pushed away the words of most of the people he knew.

One last question that comes to mind after reading the book is did Allen tell his parents about how he continued to pursue this career and if so, what were their reactions? I have a few pages left in the book so I'm not sure if he tells them or not. I'm wondering if he will become very successful and show his parents that they were wrong or if he is going to apologize  and tell them that they were right. I think that Allen, will become successful not only because he wrote the book, and he known, but of how he describes his experience with going on to pursue this career.

  1. You're blog has a lot of detail and I really liked it. I had the same second question whilst reading this book!

  2. I liked you blog, but it seems kind of ironic because I don't think he should be drawing from memory if the cover looks like that. Also that "Dylan" person has no effect on me.
