Ida B - Week of 11.18.13

Prompt: Describe the major conflict. Whose side are you on?
Pages read: 71 - 86

The major conflict in Ida B is that her mother, Ida, is battling cancer. This conflict came out of the blue and I really didn't expect it at all, I knew something bad was coming Ida B's way but I never expected it to be as serious as her mom getting cancer. At first Ida B thought it would be simple, her mom would go get surgery and have the cancer removed and everything would be okay, but it wasn't. After they did surgery the doctors saw that the cancer had spread, and that she would have to get chemotherapy. Everyday Ida B would notice how much sadder her family's house would get. I can relate to this because when my uncle was deported back to Mexico, for the next few months my house would get quiet and barely anyone would talk to each other.

The conflict really changed the mood and tone of the story because at first I thought that the story would be about a girl, with such an amazing personalty that she changes the world, but with the major conflict that just came in, it changes the whole mood, now it seems like it will be a family trying to cope with something that happens to people everyday in real life. I know think that the author wrote this story to show people how much a conflict like the one Ida B's family is going through like cancer can affect so many people.

In this case I'm pretty sure everyone and anyone would choose the families affected by cancer. Cancer is something very personal, even if you don't know someone who has been affected by it, you feel grief when you hear the word. I predict that now Ida B will give her 110% to help her mother at these times and maybe even help the entire world and other people being affected this way. After reading about the major conflict my view on this book has totally changed and I can't wait to keep on reading to see what happens!

  1. I was on and trying to finish my blog when I saw that you had posted. Do you know if the chemotherapy is dangerous? I would expect it to be if the're using it after a surgery doesn't work... Nice post!

  4. The book seems really emotional. I feel that you are very correct though. Cancer, no matter who you are can always be a touchy subject. I often remember, when I was little, a friend of mine had cancer and he would often miss weeks of school. I realized that sometimes he be their for at least a week or two before he was gone again. Luckily, to this day he is fine. If you are enjoying Ida B, I recommend you read The Fault In Our Stars by John Green. It is rather humorous in some parts, but is overall very emotional
