The Giver - Week of 11.25.13

Prompt: What ideas do you have about what is going to happen? What clues have you read that give you those ideas?
Pages read: 1 - 162

At this point of the book there are so many predictions that come to mind, some seem real, others not so much, but after reading I think anything is possible. I am thinking that Jonas wants to escape the community. While thinking this I came up with a few questions about Jonas' escape, aren't there walls or fences surrounding the community to protect it? If so, how would Jonas go over or under the wall or fence? After reading the few chapters it was unclear as to what Jonas was going to do, b
ut by the way that they described Jonas being "long gone" after the ceremony, I predicted that he would flee the community. I not only predicted because of that but by how in the book it said, "But what did it matter? If he stayed, his life was no longer worth living." This says "If he stayed.." This directly told me that Jonas was leaving. I predict that while going to leave the community, he will either get caught or have second thoughts and come back to The Giver.

Another idea about what is going to happen is that before The Giver is done giving all of the memories to Jonas, he will be released. I feel like maybe he will need to be released before Jonas knows everything and something BIG will be left out. In the book, Jonas asks The Giver if he has ever thought about his release, The Giver responds by saying that he has thought about his release, because of this I'm thinking that The Giver will not give all of the memories to Jonas and something will be left out that will cause Jonas more pain than the rest of The Receivers.

Finally, a prediction that I have thought of was that when Jonas was on his way to leave the community, he would have second thoughts and would come back. Once people find out that he is alive and that he was planning to leave, when the people would chastise him, he would finally tell everyone how he feels. Everything. He will tell everyone how he thinks it is unfair to release people and how everyone should have their own burden and then people will realize that Jonas is right and everything will change in favor of Jonas and The Giver.

  4. Your predictions are really interesting! I definitely think at least one of these will happen sooner or later in the book. I've wondered about the fences, too. I wish the author had explained that a little more. Really great blog!
