This is how I imagine Sol to be. |
Yes, I think that the title fits perfectly with the whole story because in the book, it is about a boy named Alex, who is 17. He gets drunk one night, and drives his mom's car, and he ends up crashing into one of his neighbor's lawn. He had to go to court so they could decide what his sentence was. Alex ended up having to do community service hours a a nursing home. At the end of every month, Alex needs to write a letter to the judge who sentenced him to tell him how it has been going. He is paired up with a patient named Solomon, who isn't really the type of person that you would want to "hang out with".
In the beginning, of Alex's letters to the judge, he absolutely hates having to go to the nursing home. He would write stuff like "how am I supposed to learn a lesson if he is just mean to me" and "I am not qualified enough to take care of him because of his health issues", but every time, the judge would reply that in the end he will get a big life lesson, and that the more he talks to Sol, the more Sol will actually open up to him.
Alex has some big doubts, but he has to complete the community hours, so he decides to keep on going
Now in the story, Sol seems like he is actually starting to like Alex's company. Once Alex started bringing his guitar and practicing some music pieces for his jazz band, and Sol listening, they seem to have bonded. Also, now that Alex knows that Sol is actually someone who has a daughter that never visits, and now that he has actually seen him cry over a song that he has played, he feels a bit of sympathy for him. In his letter to Judge Trent in December, he writes, "It was a hard month, but I think I may have learned a lesson: You can't just throw somebody out of your life when they displease you." I predict that in the end, even though Alex will finish his service hours, he will still come back and visit Sol.
I'm surprised you imagine Sol to be an old man, I kind of see him as a person that is lonely. It's nice to find a story that is like this one. how two people learn to like each other even when they started out hating each other.
ReplyDeleteI actually imagine Sol as an old person too. Well, because when you said health issues I thought of old people who can't poop. So that's why. Also, that's cool how they finally start to bond as they start talking more and more. What I think is going to happen is the man is going to die in a crash on a bus or maneuvering a bus and they're are going to be notes from his diary he hands to Alex before he dies and it explains his first impressions and how they were best friends after a while.
ReplyDeleteAlex must be mad crashing his car. Going to court then having to go to a nursing home. At lesset he is bonding with him now. Battle of the Books!
ReplyDeleteYou wrote a good blog. I would imagine Sol to be an old man too, because he is in a nursing home. How did his mom feel about him crashing the car and going to court? I like how you added your prediction in your blog.
