Annie Freeman's Fabulous Traveling Funeral

Prompt - Do the characters seem realistic? Why or why not?

So far, I have been introduced to one main character; Katherine Givens. Basically, in the beginning of the story she is having a devastating morning because she has found that her favorite black Bali bra has ripped. I know when you read that, you are left with a confused and maybe even disgusted face because I mentioned a bra but she actually sits down and remembers all of the happy, depression, and in the middle times that she has spent with the bra. One of the memories she talks about is her daughter telling her that she had her first kiss. To be honest, this seems a bit weird to me, like I don't ponder on my lost and worthless bras, or even think twice about them, so to me this characteristic makes her seem, out-of-the-ordinary. But on the other side of my mind, maybe there are people who are like this. But for now, I'm saying that this is the only quality about her that makes me think if this type of personality actually exists.

There is one quality about Katherine that makes me think about someone that I know in real life; she tends to overthink things a lot and not in a bad way, but in a way that gives her more than one perspective. For example, in the book it says, "'No' she answers herself the same way we all speak when we are alone and need to just hear a word so we can validate our own precious thought." To be honest, I have never actually thought about why we talk to ourselves. I have never even thought about it as a reassurance to ourselves that basically, we are still sane.

Finally, Katherine is a real feminist and she really believes in girl power and girl "connections". In the story Katherine says, "They don't talk about it because they are women and they know." She also says, "They know about comfort and the loss of it and they know about sacrifice and change and the ring of a doorbell, a wild call at midnight, the scent of something new, the touch of a baby or a over's fresh face, can change everything." I know that, that was a lengthy quote but I feel like that sentence basically summarizes who she is. When I read this, I knew that she had to be someone that the author knew personally because she just seemed so real.
