TKAM Photograph Analysis

Untitled Photo
May 1941
Eutaw, Alabama
The first thing I noticed when I saw this picture was the only single person in the picture, the boy walking down the dirt road. If you zoom into the picture you can tell that the boy is African-American and is wearing overalls. I wondered if the photographer posed the boy there or if it was just a picture took in the moment. Secondly, I noticed that out of the two houses depicted in the picture, none of them have doors or the doors are open, it is pretty hard to tell. The houses are made out of wood and they also look handmade to me since they look a bit shaky and unstable. The middle house or maybe back part of the first house has a sagging rooftop on the porch. I also noticed that on the left side of the photograph everything looks dry and dead but on the right side of the photograph there seems to be lots of trees. I wonder what type of message the photographer was trying to convey.  Finally, one of the main question I have is whether the picture was a personal photo or if it was taken for media coverage like newspapers.
This picture reminds me of Maycomb because the houses weren't miles apart but they weren't as close as apartment complexes, just like the houses in Maycomb thy have a front and backyards where Scout, Dill and Jem played in. I also picture this image as Maycomb because it is very rural, and open, and they mentioned many people have farms. One big difference I see between Maycomb and these houses in Eutaw is that there are no flowers. I know that, at least for Miss Maudine, that flowers were basically her life and many others had their own gardens, so that was something that strayed. I think that from what we have read so far about Maycomb County in the novel, this picture shows an accurate presentation of the setting.
